iPhone 3G and docking options

I finally got around to testing the iPod Universal dock and the iPhone 3G dock...and it wasn't what I expected. Here's the matrix:

* the iPhone 3G is not compatible with the universal dock - when you plug in it says "this device is not compatible with the iPhone". It charges OK though and the included remote control works with the iPhone 3G - but strangely not with the iPod Touch.

*the iPhone 3G dock provides a cradle for the phone and provides sound through little ports at the bottom when you are playing music or trying to hear your ring tone. Trouble is, the 3G dock is not compatible with composite or component video/audio cables that allow you to connect the iPhone 3G to a TV to watch slide shows etc. Apparently the iPhone 3G dock does not have all the video connections in place to support this. Proved true when the component cable was plugged into the iPhone 3G directly - it worked fine.

*the Universal dock is compatible with the component and composite cables so can you use that for the iPhone 3G but that means you need both docks!

So in summary, if you have an iPhone 3G and you want to use all the docking features you need both the 3G dock and the Universal dock since the Universal dock doesn't come with a iPhone 3G adapter and the iPhone 3G dock is not compatible with video out, only audio.

The amazing thing is, when I tested the component cable hooked up to my Dell 2407WFP monitor, it looks like crap! *sigh*

Not recommended.
